Inn on the Lake Wedding Photographer

Inn on the Lake sits on the shore of Ullswater, and the view is doing most of the work before anyone gets a camera out. The lakeside gazebo looks straight down the water, the lawns run to the shore, and the fells sit behind all of it.
The thing that makes it different to photograph is the RAF. The local base runs low level training over Ullswater, and from the grounds you get a front row view of the jets coming in low over the water.

Relaxed, documentary wedding photography at Inn on the Lake, overlooking Ullswater in the Lake District.

How a day at Inn on the Lake runs

If the weather holds, the ceremony happens outside at the lakeside gazebo with the water behind you. If it does not, it moves inside, and the rooms here look out at the same view, so you are not really losing anything by going in.
Confetti usually happens as you come back down the aisle rather than being set up somewhere else afterwards. That means it happens once and it happens quickly, so I need to be in position for it rather than asking everyone to line up again.
After that people spread out onto the lawns and there is no rush to be anywhere.

Where the best light is

Out the back, by the lake. Late in the day the light comes across the water rather than down on top of you, and the fells on the far side go soft. That is where I would take you for your couple photographs.
It is a short walk from the hotel, it does not take long, and you are back with your guests quickly. If the weather turns, the same walk still works, it just looks different rather than worse.

How I work

The same way at Inn on the Lake as anywhere else. I stay out of the way, I do not stop the day to arrange things, and I photograph it as it happens. You will not spend your afternoon being posed.
Apart from the confetti and the group shots, most of what you end up with is what actually went on while you were busy enjoying it. That is rather the point of getting married somewhere like this. You should get to be at your own wedding instead of working through a shot list.

The jets over Ullswater

This is the bit nobody puts in a venue brochure. The RAF fly low level training routes over Ullswater, and the hotel grounds have a clear view straight down the lake, so when a jet comes through it comes through right in front of you.
It is loud, it is over in seconds, and everybody stops and looks up. I keep half an eye out for it, because the faces are usually a better photograph than the aircraft is.
